At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Is very grateful for Knox's kind reply to his letter, and the enclosure of twenty dollars. Discusses his possible project in New Orleans, and would like to undertake it if he is able to start on respectable footing, with Knox's help. Will write to his family members, but is unsure whether they will help him. Comments on his upcoming trip, and the help he will need.
