At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Draft of a speech from the Massachusetts House of Representatives to the recently re-elected governor [Caleb Strong]. Discusses the importance of an independent judiciary as well as other issues of governance, and speaks approvingly of the president's attempt "to Rouse national spirit of defence." The 1 June 1803 address was published as "Answer of the House of Representatives to the Governor's speech at the opening of the session." Knox was a member of the state legislature at the time.
