Refers to recent correspondence from Knox, and declares that it would be impossible for either him or Colonel [William Stephens] Smith to put into effect the accommodation Knox proposes. Adds that Colonel Smith is embarrassed by his situation but believes he will be able to recover financially. Colonel Smith's misfortunes have unfortunately made Hammond's own finances difficult, and he has had to rely on friends to help him stay afloat. Hopes Knox will be able to immediately give him back the note Knox owes. Briefly discusses other business and social matters.
