Provides Knox with an update on the survey of the river which Knox hired him to undertake. Explains how much he has completed so far, and provides estimates about the size of different ponds and the materials lining the bottom, such as gravel and sand. Also considers the price and feasibility of building a canal, suspecting that it might be expensive, but, once built, it might offer a much less expensive trip for travelers than the over-land trip.
