At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he received Knox's letters but was kept from answering them by important business matters. Describes attempts by several groups to harm Knox's prospects in his land speculation project in Maine. Mentions one group led by Mr. [Samuel] Ely. Writes that he is "much alarm[ed]." Refers also to Captain [George] Ulmer, one of Knox's other agents in Maine, and describes how he is helping stop these conspirators (see GLC02437.06622 for related information).
