At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox discusses public reaction to Jay's Treaty, which had just been ratified candidates to fill the vacant position of U.S. Attorney General, the arrival in the U.S. of Lafayette's son, who had just escaped from Revolutionary France, mutual friends, and his own family. Knox's retained draft.
