At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses Knox's upcoming trip to Maine. Requests Knox inform him which areas will be best to raise a town and a port in Machias, Maine. Speaks of trying to prevent depredation on the land. Mentions needing a man with some "respectability & even popularity" to guard the property. Encloses the deeds to the property and asks them to be recorded in the proper offices. Speaks of the articles that were agreed upon by the committee and the terms for payment on the land.
