At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

References Knox's letter of 31 December with a note for $2,000 enclosed. Reports that Colonel Tyler is in Vermont and will write Knox fully when he returns. Wants Knox to examine the enclosed plans on his house in Maine. Says that Knox's son is with him. He conducts himself "with propriety." Mentions receiving $135 from Mr. Higginson.
