At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Flucker, sister-in-law to Lucy Knox, writes about her children's health and well-being. Discusses the importance of good education and mentions that she plans to take her two sons, along with Mrs. Knox and her son, Henry, to look at a school. Hopes Knox will recommend her children for admittance. Speaks of her thankfulness that the Knoxes have been so kind and accepting of her and her family. Comments on their vacation visiting Henry Jackson in Dorchester, and mentions all the friends they have been able to see.
