At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses a letter addressed to Monroe from Colonel Joseph Martin (not present), who was formerly an Indian Agent for the state of Virginia. Explains that if the letter contains anything important, Knox would be the proper person to handle the business, so he is forwarding the letter to him.
