At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt for the $150 paid to Caleb Swan as a deputy agent to the Creek Indians from 14 February-14 May 1791. A note indicates that Caleb's brother Samuel Swan was given the money by Henry Knox of the War Department. The receipt appears to be written and signed in Swan's hand.
