Encloses an open letter to Mr. McConnell, agreeable to Knox's request in a letter of 19 October. Has calculated the amount due to him by Wililam Knox (it is broken down on page 2 - the total amount is $916) and wants the money by 16 November. If he needs an extension until mid-December, it will be allowed. Is anxious about Samuel Shaw and "much chagrined" he has not written. As he was recently out of America, wants to know if a letter was sent to Knox. Reports that Shaw drew on him for £6,000 sterling, which he [Randall] accepted last September. Must remit that money to London by December. Will force him to make "great exertions" if Shaw does not arrive by that time with the funds. It will cause him great difficulty to make the payment "without prejudicing our speculations as I can make little or no sale of my teas." Will accept Knox's draft for $2,000.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
