At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter of introduction from Ramsay for Mr. Harper, "an eminent young Lawyer" of South Carolina. Requests Knox shows Harper attention while he is in Philadelphia. Does not usually ask for these types of favors, but thinks Knox will gain much pleasure from meeting Harper. Says the young man has "prospects ... in our rising empire."
