At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Knox as Secretary of War to Livingston, an Albany merchant. References Livingston's letter of 31 May. Encloses a bill for 36 dollars to pay Lieutenant Foy the Collector. Says he does not have a copy of the receipt "annexed to Mr. Duer." (Knox owed money to Livingston for a house rental.) Is not sure if it has been refused. Apologizes and says he did not mean to offend.
