At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells Knox he is inclosing "brief remarks upon a subject of public importance." He further asks Knox, "I beg leave to remark that I do not appear to be the writer except to such public Characters as from a sense of duty & from respect I deem it necessary to communicate a copy." The letter does not specify what his remarks actually were.
