At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he has just heard that Mr. [Samuel] Osgood has been appointed Postmaster General. Wonders whether it would be appropriate to submit a proposal to be Postmaster of Philadelphia. Explains that Knox is the only person to whom he is presenting the idea, and would like Knox's opinion before he proceeds.
