At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hopes not to offend him by communicating his wishes. Repeats his desire to obtain an appointment with the new government, whether in the civil or military arena. Notes that in a 27 February 1787 letter to Cooper, Knox had expressed a favorable opinion of him. Apologizes for troubling Knox on the subject.
