At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Has written to several members of Congress about his desire to receive an appointment in the new Government. Declares that Knox knows his family well and knows that he has always been a "staunch friend to my Country." Also mentions his misfortune after the war. Asks Knox to use his influence to help him obtain a position.
