At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that he had to leave Springfield, Massachusetts, on account of his ill health. Asks if Knox has settled his account for the work he completed. Requests "any imployment... In the Public Service." Instructs Knox to direct his reply to the care of William Cranch. "Public business" written on address leaf with no signature.
