Body of the letter and signatures in the hand of Robert Pemberton, Knox's aide. Document titled, "Extract of a letter from a gentleman of character in General Lincoln's army, to his friend at New York." Addressee may be Richard Platt; identified only as "Lieutenant Colonel Platt." Document contains extracts from Colonel Haskell's letter, as well as portions of two letters from Daniel Shays, and the reply of General Benjamin Lincoln. Haskell's portions contain information as to the strength of Pelham as a position to station the government troops. Shays's letters offer terms of surrender, and are cosigned by Francis Stone and Adam Wheeler. Lincoln's reply declares that it is not in his power to satisfy the terms. Also relates some exchanges between Shays's forces and the government forces as to who provoked whom.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
