At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gibbs transmits a newspaper to Knox in New York. Discusses "the turbulent news of the day," referring to Bostonians' recent decision not to buy goods from resident British "factors," or agents (newspaper not included). Notes that Knox's wife, Lucy, beat him at a game of chess the previous evening.
