At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Jackson, one of Knox's closest friends, encloses letters that arrived on a ship from London (letters not included). Reports that goods shipped by Knox's brother, William, on the Hero are consigned to Knox. Advises Knox to sell the goods as quickly as possible to avoid financial embarrassment, noting that Henry's wife, Lucy, agrees.
