At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the artillery of the army and corrects a mistake regarding the placement of the dolphins for the guns. Also discusses placement of the "Arms of the United States" on artillery. Closes by saying that "Although peace has taken place" he still wishes to have six of the howitzers cast "as soon as possible." Signature is partially torn off.
