At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes in response to Thomas Coffin's letter to Knox (see GLC02437.02075). Knox vouches for Coffin's good character and asks Humphreys if Washington will give Coffin a pass to visit his family in Boston. Notes that John Hancock has given permission. In a postscript, notes that Caleb [White?] of headquarters must know Coffin.
