At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the circumstances of a missing 1/4 barrel of gunpowder. Takes responsiblity for the mistake and loss. Includes an autograph note signed by George Fleming stating that the Stoney Point magazine is unfit for powder storage. Also includes an autograph note signed by Samuel Shaw stating that Fenno is to return to "this post."
