At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a matter before Congress regarding Hunt's retirement. Notes that Nicholls from Georgia, (John Calhoun Nicholls, United States Representative 1879-1880 and 1883-1884) has agreed to vote "to retire Genl Hunt as Major Genl". Further discusses Hunt's case. General Mackall served as chief-of-staff under Generals Braxton Bragg and Joseph E. Johnston, among other Confederate posts.
