General Johnston and his men are advancing towards Decatur, Alabama, and will soon join with Beauregard. Johnston's plan was use the rails to get from Decatur to Corinth, Mississippi. While this plan wound up succeeding, it took longer than Johnston expected, due to poor train service. One bust engraving of Mackall included as collateral. + 1 engraving ; b&w ; 24.2 x 14.7 cm.

Discusses contacting acquaintances in the House and Senate to advocate Hunt's bill (possibly a bill regarding military retirement pay). Promises to attempt to persuade Governor Brown to support the bill (Joseph Brown, a Senator from Georgia who had served as Georgia's Governor 1855-1865). Discusses mutual acquaintances, and notes that his wife and daughter have reduced him to three cigars per day. For related letters, refer to GLC2382.120 and .121. Notes that Nicholls from Georgia, (John Calhoun Nicholls, United States Representative 1879-1880 and 1883-1884) has agreed to vote "to retire Genl Hunt as Major Genl". Further discusses Hunt's case. General Mackall served as chief-of-staff under Generals Braxton Bragg and Joseph E. Johnston, among other Confederate posts.
