At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks Hunt for the manuscript of an article he previously enclosed. Praises Hunt's account, and his skill while serving as Chief of Artillery. Says, "When I remember what positions you held under me & what the relative work done was, I am amazed beyond expression by the magnificent disdain of one to whom I gave a [illegible] in my last battle, while you commanded the artillery the whole Army!!" Indicates that he will forward the manuscript to Newton (possibly John Newton, who had also served as a General during the Civil War).
