At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Swears that Ulysses S. Grant deposited $1000 in the trunk of Captain Gore in early June. Comments that on the night of June 16, "the trunk containing said funds was stolen from the tent of Capt. Gore, this whilst Capt. Gore and myself were both sleeping in the tent." Swears that he "heard Lieut. Grant say that he was going to put it [the $1000] there and afterwads hearing Capt. Gore say that it was there." Signed by Lieutenant John DeRussy and 1st Lieutenant H.D. Waller, Judge Advocate of the General Court Marshall.
