At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He discusses his health, the harshness of the weather, and his hopes of coming home for a "bolle of hur best bread and milk, dun up in thew yankey style." Bartlett ends with instructions on where and what he would like to see Mr. Andrews do with the money he is sending.
