At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In order to comply with a congressional resolution passed on 27 April 1816 to make a report of all those employed in the Indian agencies (listing their names, states of origin, and compensation), Clark requests that Graham send the relevant information from his agency in the Illinois Territory.
