Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The top portion of the page is missing so there is no date. Written in the last days of the war, probably April 1865. Confederate General Hardee informs Confederate Beauregard that "A large number of my command deserted last night - some with horses from the reserve Arty. I anticipate many more will go today & tonight."
