Written by Confederate Brigadier General Hardee. Fifth Edition copy of volume 1 (first published in 1855). Printed in the "First Year of the Confederacy" by S.H. Goetzel & Co. This book was the standard instructional manual for the U.S. Army when it was first written and became the most widely used manual during the Civil War by both sides. Provides information on how to run a company, battalion and regiment as well as how to train individual solders. Signed 14 times by Captain William H. Wilkinson. First time in pencil says "W. H. In a clerical hand, Confederate General Hardee reports to Adjutant and Inspector General Cooper on the operations of his corps of the Army of Tennessee, including the loss of Atlanta and his differences with General John B. Hood, whom he blames for the loss. He states that his report is late because, "most of the General officers in that Corps having been killed, wounded or captured in the recent Tennessee Campaign ..." Discusses Bragg's accusations that General Polk (possibly Leonidas Polk) disobeyed his orders during previous operations in Kentucky. Discusses military matters. Wishes to know the strength of the army Wharton is fighting, says he cannot send General Wood's forces far away, and says his men will soon be prepared to fight. Address page contains a penciled endorsement signed by Wharton, sent to Wood, saying he is preparing to attack the enemy. Written shortly before the Battle of Murfreesboro and the Stones River Campaign.

Garner, assistant adjutant general for General Braxton Bragg, commander of the Department of Mississippi). Relates that a courier named Cory has been captured and is now at the headquarters of Union General McCook (possibly Alexander McDowell McCook).
