At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter signed by Gerry as a Maryland Congressman. Also signed by William Smith of Maryland and Josiah Parker of Virginia. Requests that Sullivan, as the Governor of New Hampshire, transmit the proper statements to the House of Representatives concerning the revenue and commerce of the state. This letter is written on page two. On page one is an extract of a motion of the House of Representative signed by John Beckley, as Clerk, directing that information be gathered on imports and exports from several states and foreign and domestic vessels entering and leaving.
