Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in Saint Francois County. Signed by Cobb, John A. Weber, Reinhart Laney, Elisha J. White, and Thomas Lang as citizens of Saint Francois County Missouri. The signees swear that they are personally acquainted with Catherine E. Murphy, a widow living in Farmington accused of spying for the Confederacy, and will vouch for her loyalty to the Union.
