At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter addressed to Boudinot as Commissary General of Prisoners. Requests to be exchanged as a prisoner of war because he was wounded at Fort Montgomery and is not well. He asks to be paroled or exchanged to go to Dutchess County so he may heal. He informs Boudinot that his rank is Second Lieutenant in Captain James Stewart's company, Colonel Lewis DuBois's Regiment, fifth regiment of the state of New York.
