At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by John Lawrence, the Treasurer of Connecticut. Co-signed by Oliver Ellsworth, a member of the Paytable Committee, that was responsible for paying the Revolutionary bills of Connecticut. Receipt requesting Lawrence to pay Captain Eliphalet Bulkley, paymaster of a company, 50 pounds charged to the Colony of Connecticut. Autograph note, signed by Bulkely, says he received the payment on 2 July 1776. Autograph note, in Seymour's hand, signed by Bulkely on verso, says he received the payment on 2 July 1776. Autograph document signed, by J. Treadwell, below docket says that the payment was audited on 1 September 1777.
