At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter written to his brother in Aberdeen, Scotland. States that he got a letter from Mr. Moir about his financial affairs. His regiment is under orders for embarkation so he had to request 40 pounds from Moir to prepare. Discusses his pending promotion in rank and the finances involved with it. Informs him that they do not know where the regiment will be sent but some think the West Indies. Gives his love to family and friends. Charles Irvine was a soldier in the British army during the Revolutionary War.
