At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt and account for Major Roger's board and lodging from 5 July to 8 November 1768 while on trial for treason against England. Signed by Maxwell that 43 pounds, five shillings and four pense sterling was paid 18 February 1769.
