Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One group portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt with foreign diplomats dated August 5, 1905. From left to right, photograph of Count Sergei Witte (Russian diplomat and Minister of Finance), Baron Roman Romanovich Rosen (Russian Ambassador to Japan), Theodore Roosevelt (United States President, 1901-1909), Marquis Jutaro Komura (Foreign Minister in Japan's Katsura Cabinet) and Baron Kogoro Takahira (Japanese Ambassador to the United States). The photograph is signed at the bottom by each of the five dignitaries, below their respective images.
