At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Records orders related to various kinds of authorized troop movements. Lists movement of individual military personnel, leaves of absence for officers, and unit positions. The orders are given by Longstreet and Anderson, but signed by only Latrobe and Sorrel. Written during the East Tennessee campaign and the siege of Petersburg. Dated January 1, 1864 - April 1, 1865.
