At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He expresses his belief in prayer, particularly that the will of God may happen. He has not received remuneration for his inventions, but has not lost hope that they will be found valuable in the future. His work with the hospitals, Young Men's Christian Association, and the Union League, as well as the comparison of excise taxes, keep him occupied.
