At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed "My dear sister." Includes updates on mutual friends and family. Andrew Jackson adopted his wife's nephew and named him Andrew Jackson, Jr. Sarah Yorke, his wife, was the president's daughter-in-law. Emma Yorke Farquhar Donelson married Jackson's nephew, Thomas Jefferson Donelson, Andrew Jackson, Jr.'s twin brother.
