At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing to Attorney General Bates, Lincoln recommends Philip Fraser, a unionist lawyer in Jacksonville, Florida be appointed District Judge for the Eastern District of Florida. Fraser comes recommended by Senator David Wilmot and House Speaker Galusha A. Grow. Lincoln requests a nomination for him unless Bates can give a reason against it.
