Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports no news from Europe or General Nathanael Greene. Hopes that the Comte de Grasse comes to Chesapeake Bay to support the Americans against Lord Cornwallis, which he did later that month. Also notes that "Vermont is to be admitted into the Union as a fourteenth State -- a fifteenth must soon follow as a balance."
