An anonymous author criticizes Van Buren and the Free Soil Party, which nominated him as candidate for the 1848 Presidential election: "No event in the history of political parties in this country since the establishment of the government, has excited more surprise, than the recent nomination of Martin Van Buren by the Buffalo Convention, as the Free-Soil, or Anti-Slavery Candidate for the Presidency."
