At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

On the fifteenth anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, Herbert Hoover writes to "express the hope that the ideal of the establishment of the National Jewish Home in Palestine, as embodied in that Declaration, will continue to prosper." Also notes his admiration for the revival of Palestine through the "hard work and self-sacrifice of the Jewish pioneers." Written on White House stationery.
