Longstreet comments on how his decision to attack Knoxville was affected by General Braxton Bragg's retreat from Chattanooga to Dalton following the loss at Missionary Ridge. Longstreet could not, however, hold against the enemy and retreated to a position of safety near Bean Station in hopes of gaining an opportunity to stike an enemy column that might approach from Cumberland Gap. [Ligons?] force should execute the move to the right of the enemy force... The force that joins Col Ligons will move to the enemys rear and catch him should he try to escape. If the information that you have is such as to warrant your move you may sit out... You will leave one brigade..." Written in pencil.

General Longstreet discusses the reconstruction policies of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson with Fowler, a judge in Boston, Massachusetts. He states "The independent action of President Johnson, was the error that lead the grave troubles that came to the south, and to the north afterwards. Had Congress been called in extra session after the surrender, affairs would have been arranged in a way that would have been, as promptly accepted as was the independence policy" of President Lincoln.
