At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly written in Tennessee. Marked "Confidential." Longstreet, commander of the Department of East Tennessee, writes to Wheeler, commanding cavalry corps, Army of Tennessee. Orders Wheeler to send half of General John Austin Wharton's force to Kingston, and half to cover the Union's escape route. Notes "Keep us advised hourly and send two couriers with each dispatch." Written in pencil.
