Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Carte de visite. Collodion glass plate negative presented as an ambrotype. Glass negative accompanied by modern contact print from the negative. Showsa mature Longstreet in civilian clothing (probably 4/1865). Glass carte de visite negative is in a brass protector, with two 20th century contact prints (silver process). Dimensions are size of protector. LIMITED USE: USE COPY PRINT.
